China Opposes New Zealand's AUKUS Membership: Raises Concerns Over National Interests
As discussions progress regarding New Zealand's potential membership in the security alliance AUKUS, comprised of the United States, United Kingdom, and Australia, the nation finds itself facing opposition from China. Ambassador Wang Xiaolong, speaking at an economic event in Auckland on the 20th local time, expressed China's concerns, as reported by Bloomberg.
Ambassador Wang emphasized, "When making the decision to join AUKUS, New Zealand must consider its long-term and fundamental interests as well as the stability of its bilateral relationship with China." He further added, "China harbors serious concerns because AUKUS could impact the international nuclear non-proliferation regime and the prohibition of nuclear weapons in the Pacific region."
AUKUS consists of plans for the United States and the United Kingdom to provide Australia with nuclear-powered submarine technology (Pillar 1) and to share advanced military technology (Pillar 2). While New Zealand is considering joining Pillar 2, Ambassador Wang opposes this, advocating for nuclear-related military cooperation under Pillar 1.
China has publicly voiced its opposition to New Zealand's membership and, back in March, emphasized this during a meeting between the Communist Party's Central Foreign Affairs Office Director and New Zealand's Foreign Minister.
Despite New Zealand strengthening its ties with the United States since the formation of a center-right government, the reality remains that considering China as its largest trading partner, completely disregarding China's stance is not feasible.

뉴질랜드는 미국, 영국, 호주로 구성된 안보동맹인 오커스(AUKUS) 가입에 대한 논의를 진행하는 가운데 중국의 반발에 직면하고 있다. 왕샤오룽 중국 주재 대사는 20일(현지시간) 뉴질랜드 오클랜드에서 열린 한 경제 행사에서 발언하며, 이에 대한 중국의 우려를 나타내었다고 블룸버그 통신이 보도했다.
왕 대사는 "뉴질랜드가 오커스 가입 결정을 내릴 때 장기적이고 근본적인 이익과 중국과의 양자관계의 안정을 고려해야 한다"고 강조했다. 그는 또한 "오커스가 국제 핵무기 비확산 체제와 태평양 지역의 핵무기 무장 금지 등에 영향을 줄 수 있기 때문에 중국은 이에 대한 심각한 우려를 가지고 있다"고 덧붙였다.
AUKUS는 미국과 영국이 호주에 핵추진 잠수함 기술을 제공하는 계획인 필러1과 첨단 군사 분야 기술을 공유하는 필러2로 구성되어 있다. 뉴질랜드는 필러2에 가입할 가능성을 고려하고 있으나, 왕 대사는 이를 반대하며 필러1 아래에서의 핵관련 군사협력도 지지하는 입장을 밝혔다.
중국은 뉴질랜드의 가입에 반대하는 입장을 공개적으로 피력하고 있으며, 지난 3월에는 중국공산당 중앙외사판공실 주임 겸 외교부장이 뉴질랜드 외교장관과의 회담에서 이를 더욱 강조한 바 있다.
뉴질랜드는 최근 중도우파 성향의 정부 출범 이후 미국과의 관계를 강화하고 있으나, 중국이 뉴질랜드의 최대 교역국임을 감안할 때 중국의 입장을 완전히 무시할 수는 없는 실정이다.
