Flood Crisis Strikes St Heliers, Auckland… Infrastructure Decay Emerges as Emergency
Auckland's Saint Heliers district was hit by its third flood in three years on the night of the 20th, leaving neighbors in distress. Mr. Jim Flynn, 81, residing on Grampian Road, found himself facing an emergency situation due to the flooding.
Mr. Flynn reported that within 8 minutes of heavy rain, 30cm of water rushed into his house. Water poured in from the front and back doors, as well as drains in the bathtub and shower, unleashing a major disaster.
This flood marks the third time Mr. Flynn's house has been inundated. He lamented that he has already renovated his house twice and recently has been spending more time outside than indoors.
Neighbors expressed greater concerns about the revealed infrastructure problems brought to light by this flood. There's a growing criticism, particularly during heavy rainfall, of the council's inadequate handling, citing instances of manhole explosions.
According to New Zealand's Fire and Emergency authorities, 50 emergency rescue requests were received from Monday 20th, 10 PM, to Tuesday morning 3 AM. The period from 11 PM to 2 AM was noted as the busiest.
Mr. MacRae, the Auckland Council's Heathy Waters chief, stated that hotspot inspections and cleaning were conducted before the rain. However, the issue of leaves blocking road drains and rainwater entering underground pipe systems remains unresolved.

오클랜드 세인트 헬리어스 지역에서 20일 밤, 집안으로 3년 만에 3번째로 찾아온 홍수가 이웃들을 고통스럽게 만들었다. 그랜피언 로드(Grampian Rd)에 거주하고 있는 81세의 진 플린씨는 홍수로 인한 비상 상황에 직면했다.
플린씨는 비가 쏟아지자 8분 만에 집 안으로 30cm의 물이 쏟아져 들어왔다고 말했다. 집 앞과 뒷문, 욕조와 샤워실의 배수구에서 물이 쏟아져 들어오면서 대형 재난이 펼쳐졌다.
이번 홍수로 인해 집이 침수되는 일은 이번이 세 번째다. 이미 집을 두 번이나 개조했다는 플린씨는 최근들어 집에서 보내는 시간보다는 밖에서의 생활이 더 많아졌다고 토로했다.
이웃들은 이번 홍수로 드러난 인프라의 문제에 대해 더 큰 우려를 표했다. 특히 폭우가 내리면 맨홀이 폭발하는 등 시의회의 대처 미흡을 지적하는 목소리가 높아지고 있다.
뉴질래드 화재 및 비상사태 당국에 따르면 월요일 20일 오후 10시부터 화요일 오전 3시까지 50건의 긴급 구조 요청이 접수되었다. 특히 오후 11시부터 오전 2시까지가 가장 바쁜 시간대였다고 한다.
오클랜드 시의회 Heathy Waters책임자 맥로이는 비가 내리기 전에 핫스팟 검사와 청소 작업을 진행했다고 밝혔다. 그러나 낙엽이 도로 배수구를 막고 빗물이 지하 파이프 시스템으로 유입되는 문제는 여전히 해결되지 않은 채 남아있다.
