New Zealand's immigration patterns have once again undergone a significant shift. According to the latest statistics, in March 2024, emigration among New Zealand citizens reached an all-time high. Data released by Statistics New Zealand indicates that during the past year, 52,500 New Zealand citizens departed for overseas destinations.
Teshen Islam, the administrator of immigration statistics, explained, "The emigration loss of New Zealand citizens exceeding 50,000 this year is unprecedented." He further added, "From a long-term perspective, this means there are 1,000 more citizens leaving New Zealand than arriving."
However, it's not just New Zealand citizens on the move; immigration from non-New Zealanders also saw significant figures. The overall net immigration increase was primarily driven by citizens from India, the Philippines, China, Fiji, and other non-New Zealand countries. Consequently, in March 2024, there was a total immigration increase of 111,100 individuals.
Islam analyzed, "While immigration flow from non-New Zealand citizens remains high, there has been a slight tapering in recent times." He noted that this change appears to be attributed to the relaxation of various border restrictions related to COVID-19 and alterations in immigration policies.

뉴질랜드의 이민 흐름이 또 한번 변화를 맞이했다. 최신 통계에 따르면, 2024년 3월에는 뉴질랜드 시민의 이주 손실이 역대 최고치를 기록했다. 뉴질랜드 통계청이 발표한 자료에 따르면, 지난 해 동안 5만 2,500명의 뉴질랜드 시민들이 해외로 떠나는 것으로 나타났다.
이민 통계를 관리하는 테셰인 이슬람은 "이번 연도의 뉴질랜드 시민의 이주 손실이 5만 명을 넘어서는 것은 이례적"이라고 설명했다. 그는 "이는 장기적인 관점에서 볼 때, 뉴질랜드를 떠나는 시민이 도착하는 시민보다 1,000명 더 많다는 것을 의미합니다"라고 덧붙였다.
하지만, 뉴질랜드 시민의 이동뿐만 아니라 비뉴질랜드 시민의 이민도 높은 수치를 기록했다. 전체적인 순 이민 증가는 주로 인도, 필리핀, 중국, 피지 시민 등 비뉴질랜드 시민들에 의해 이끌렸다. 이에 따라 2024년 3월에는 전체적으로 11만 1,100명의 이민 증가가 있었다.
이슬람은 "뉴질랜드 시민이 아닌 사람들의 이민 흐름이 여전히 높지만, 최근에는 조금 둔화되고 있다"고 분석했다. 이러한 변화는 코로나19와 관련된 여러 국경 제한의 완화 및 이민 정책의 변화에 따른 것으로 보인다고 덧붙였다.
