Auckland, January 27 - Following record-breaking rainfall due to climate change, the Onehunga area in Auckland was inundated by a devastating flood. Now, a new townhouse development plan in this area has sparked controversy among local residents and potential buyers. Mayor Brown recently expressed concerns that despite the plans for developing flood-submerged land, land developers and local councils are ignoring this crucial fact.
The disputed area in question is located at 65 Victoria St, Onehunga, where 24 townhouses are currently on the market. Mayor Brown insists that buildings can be constructed in the flood-prone area but urges that homes should be built at least 1.5 meters above the flood level to prevent future flooding.
In January, when a storm raged through the region, rising groundwater turned the construction site into a lake. The area, which transformed into a river that even reached the Samoa Church grounds, is no longer land, according to nearby residents who are pointing out this fact.
The New Zealand Herald attempted to seek comments from the site developers but was met with a refusal.
Another real estate case facing flood risks is the story of Nick, the first-time homebuyer in Mount Wellington. The backyard of his new townhouse gets submerged even with light rain, making it difficult for him and his family to sleep during rainy nights. They demanded that developers refrain from building in flood-prone areas.
Sarah Nox from the New Zealand Insurance Association urged homebuyers to conduct a thorough investigation of the surrounding area and all risk factors associated with a property before relying on home insurance.
