Inflation rate falls to 5.6% as economic cooling continues
According to data released by the statistical agency on October 17th, New Zealand's Consumer Price Index (CPI) for the 3/4 quarter has been recorded at 5.6%, indicating a continued decline in inflation. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) is a key indicator reflecting the annual fluctuations in prices of goods and services.
Although the annual figures show a downward trend, the inflation rate for the 3/4 quarter is 1.8%, indicating an increase in prices over the past few months. Particularly noteworthy is the 1.1% increase in the inflation rate for the 2/4 quarter of this year.
The rise in prices for this quarter was led by a 11.6% increase in private transportation supply and service costs, with transportation costs specifically increasing by 7.1%. Household utility bills increased by 1.7%, while real estate fees and related services saw a 9.4% increase, and rent rose by 1.2%, forming the core of the overall consumer price increase.
Food prices increased by 0.9%, significantly lower compared to the 2.2% inflation rate in the previous quarter. This trend follows the record-high CPI of 7.3% in the 2/4 quarter of 2022, after which a recent cooling trend has persisted.
With the recent election drawing attention to the cost of living, food prices have become a major factor. In terms of annual increase rates, food prices have risen by 8.8% over the 12 months leading up to the 3/4 quarter of this year, remaining the most significant inflationary factor.
However, the Reserve Bank does not anticipate inflation returning to the target range by the end of next year. Consequently, it appears that the benchmark interest rate will be maintained at a high level over an extended period.

최근 선거에서 생활비가 관심을 받음에 따라 식품 가격은 주요 동인으로 부각되었다. 연간 상승률에서 식품 가격은 올해 3/4분기까지 12개월 동안 8.8% 상승하여 가장 큰 인플레이션 요인으로 남아 있다.
그러나 준비은행(Reserve Bank)은 내년 말까지 인플레이션이 목표 범위로 회귀하지 않을 것으로 전망하고 있다. 이에 따라 기준금리가 장기간에 걸쳐 높은 수준을 유지할 것으로 보인다.
