Statistics New Zealand Releases Q3 2023 Consumer Price Index (CPI) and Housing Price Increase
New Zealand's Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose by 5.6% year-on-year from July to September 2023, as reported.
Citing data released by Statistics New Zealand, the publication noted that despite the third-quarter CPI increase being at its lowest level in two years, it still significantly surpasses the target range of 1-3% set by the Reserve Bank of New Zealand.
The statistical agency explained that prices for everything, from groceries to housing, experienced an upturn.
The second-quarter CPI increase of 6.0% in the period from April to June moderated slightly, dropping by 0.4 percentage points to 5.6%. Overall, the third-quarter increase accelerated by 1.8% compared to the second quarter, reaching 1.1%.
Market expectations were slightly undercut, with a 5.9% year-on-year increase and a 2.0% increase from the second quarter being anticipated last year.
Additionally, the two-year swap rate recorded a decline of 7 basis points (0.07 percentage points), settling at 5.63%. Market indicators suggest a decrease in the probability of a rate hike in November from 33% to 20% before the release of indicators such as CPI.
The New Zealand dollar exchange rate experienced a 0.3% decrease, settling at 0.5910 New Zealand dollars per US dollar.
Statistics New Zealand attributed the acceleration in third-quarter CPI mainly to increases in construction costs and rental prices. The rise in the second quarter, on the other hand, was primarily attributed to an increase in food prices.

통계국은 3분기 CPI의 가속은 주로 공사비와 임대료의 상승 때문이라고 설명했다. 또한, 2분기 대비 상승한 이유는 주로 식품 가격 상승으로 지목했다.
