The leading sector in political donations in New Zealand has been revealed to be the real estate industry.

Additionally, the second-highest amount recorded in political donations comes from the "financial sector," where contributions are also mainly directed towards the National Party, ACT, and NZ First. The financial sector recorded a donation of 1.97 million dollars, followed by the manufacturing and retail sector with 1.92 million dollars.
Since early 2021, the National Party, having received over 1.3 million dollars in donations from the real estate sector, actively promotes policies advantageous to this sector. Their proposals include shortening the tax payment period for residential rental properties, restoring tax deductions for loan costs, and contemplating policies allowing foreigners to purchase real estate exceeding 2 million dollars.
Controversy surrounding these donations arose when Speargrass Holdings, a real estate development company, and its director, Christopher Meehan, made substantial donations to the National Party and ACT. This was followed by a statement supporting legal proceedings related to housing development, raising debates about the relationship between democracy and donations currently unfolding in New Zealand.
Max, a senior researcher at Victoria University in Wellington, emphasized the direct impact of the real estate industry on government decisions, highlighting its strong influence in the sector.
