Westpac has recently forecasted a potential rise in unemployment based on the published confidence index.
The Westpac McDermott Miller Employment Confidence Index showed a decline in the third quarter of September. This marks the first negative sentiment towards the labor market since March 2021 and records the lowest figure since December 2020.
Darrin Gibbs, Chief Economist at Westpac, stated, "Workers are increasingly feeling the difficulty of finding employment," explaining that this is a result reflecting various factors such as recent job losses and increased competition for vacancies following the reopening of borders. He emphasized that these signs indicate a potential increase in the unemployment rate.
Gibbs emphasized, "According to recent figures, it appears that the unemployment rate is expected to rise further in the remaining period of this year."
Additionally, confidence in household income growth showed a slight decline in the September quarter, particularly after surveys indicated an overall decrease post the Covid-19 pandemic. Gibbs analyzed that the cost of living played a significant role in shaping these perceptions, stating, "Even those with significantly increased salaries still feel they are struggling for success."
Furthermore, Imogen Rendall, a management consulting expert at McDermott Miller, explained, "In the last quarter, employment confidence in the 30-49 age group saw the most significant decline," highlighting concerns across various age groups regarding job prospects and future employment opportunities. However, she added, "The elderly are also harboring concerns about their personal employment stability in the coming year."
