New Zealand's economy has witnessed substantial growth in the June quarter. According to data released by the statistics bureau on September 21, the country's GDP for the June quarter grew by 0.9% compared to the previous quarter, with an annual growth rate of 3.2%. This marks a significant recovery for the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), which had recorded zero growth compared to the previous quarter in March before showing strong growth in the June quarter.
The primary driver of GDP growth in the June quarter was the "Business Services" sector. Statistics officials explained that "Computer System Design" played a prominent role within this sector. Moreover, the contributions to GDP growth came from sectors such as public administration, security, defense, leasing, employment, real estate services, as well as electricity, gas, water supply, and waste management. Notably, within the manufacturing sector, the manufacture of transportation equipment and machinery led the growth, marking an upturn after five consecutive quarters of decline.
Officials cited the impact of "Cyclone Gabriel" for the rebound in sectors like education, transportation, postal, and warehousing, which had experienced a decline in the March quarter. However, sectors like agriculture, forestry, and fishing, heavily affected by severe weather conditions, showed a decrease in GDP for both the March and June quarters compared to the previous quarters.
In addition, exports increased by 5.0%, fueled by dairy products, forestry, and meat exports, while household consumption rose by 0.4% compared to the previous quarter, driven by increased spending on durable goods, including automobiles and audiovisual devices. These trends led to reduced inventory levels, particularly impacting the automotive and forestry sectors.
