Food Price Index rose 8.9% in August year-on-year
Food prices have maintained a significant upward trend for an extended period, but recent data reveals that they increased by 8.9% annually until August. This is seen as a slight stabilization in the market.
Over the past few months, staple foods such as eggs, yogurt, and potato chips, along with dairy products, have been identified as the primary drivers of rising food prices. However, while the annual increase rate for this month has decreased compared to the 9.6% from the previous month, it still remains high, especially when compared to the double-digit increases seen in April and June earlier this year.
According to data from the national statistics agency, non-perishable Food recorded an annual increase of 10.6%, while restaurant meals and instant foods saw 8.9% increases each. Additionally, meat, poultry, and fish prices increased by 8.0%, while non-alcoholic beverages, as well as fruit and vegetable prices, rose by 9.1% and 5.4%, respectively.
Following non-perishable foods, the sectors that had the most significant impact on annual increases were restaurant meals and instant foods. This sector was primarily influenced by the costs of lunch and dinner as well as takeout food.
On the other hand, monthly food prices increased by 0.5% in August compared to July, and the seasonally adjusted increase rate stood at 0.4%. Statisticians explained that prices of fruits and vegetables, such as tomatoes, grapes, cucumbers, and peaches, had the most significant impact on the monthly increase rate until August.

한편, 월간 식료품 물가는 7월 대비 8월에 0.5% 상승했으며, 계절적 요소를 고려한 조정된 상승률은 0.4%로 나타났다. 통계 담당자는 토마토, 포도, 오이, 복숭아와 같은 과일과 채소의 가격이 8월까지의 월간 상승률에 가장 큰 영향을 미쳤다고 설명했다.
