Retail activity up in March 2024 quarter after eight declines
According to the latest statistics, retail sales activity has shown a steep upward trend, reversing its course after 9 quarters. Adjusted for price inflation and seasonal factors, the 'total retail sales' increased by 0.5% in the quarter ending March this year.
This increase marks a significant improvement compared to the previous quarter and contrasts with the downward trend seen over the past 8 quarters. Officials from the statistical agency noted that this upturn reflects a slight rise in retail activity and growth across nearly all industry sectors, interpreting it as a reversal of the two-year decline.
Among the 15 retail industry sectors, 9 sectors experienced increased sales compared to the previous December quarter, with the food and beverage services sector particularly notable for its substantial growth of 2.2%. The automotive and parts sector recorded a 1.1% increase, while the retail sectors of recreation goods and accommodation also showed growth of 4.7% and 4.1% respectively.
Meanwhile, results from regional surveys indicate that retail activity increased in 13 out of 16 regions nationwide compared to the previous quarter. Particularly, in the Canterbury and Otago regions, retail activity saw a significant surge influenced by an increase in overseas visitors participating in special events and Easter vacations. Events such as 'SailGP' and 'Warbirds Over Wanaka' are also analyzed to have contributed to this growth.

이러한 증가는 직전 분기에 비해 상당한 향상을 나타내며, 최근 8분기 동안의 감소 추세와 대조된다. 통계국 담당자는 이번 증가가 소매 활동의 소폭 상승과 거의 모든 산업 분야에서의 성장을 반영하며, 이는 지난 2년간의 하락세를 뒤집은 것으로 해석된다고 밝혔다.
15개의 소매 산업 분야 중 9개 분야가 전년 12월 분기 대비 매출이 증가했으며, 특히 식음료 서비스 분야가 2.2%의 큰 폭으로 성장했다. 자동차 및 부품 분야는 1.1%의 증가를 기록했으며, 레크리에이션 용품 소매 분야와 숙박 분야도 각각 4.7%와 4.1%의 성장을 보였다.
한편, 지역별로 조사한 결과, 전국의 16개 지역 중 13개 지역에서 전 분기보다 소매 활동이 증가했다. 특히 캔터베리와 오타고 지역에서는 특별한 행사에 참여한 해외 방문객의 증가와 부활절 휴가 등의 영향으로 소매 활동이 크게 늘었다. 'SailGP'와 'Warbirds Over Wanaka'와 같은 이벤트도 이러한 성장에 영향을 미쳤을 것으로 분석되고 있다.
