ANZ Bank Reports 1% Increase in First-Half Revenue… CEO Anticipates Challenges Amid Economic Slowdown
New Zealand's largest bank, ANZ NZ, announced a 1% increase in revenue for the first half of the year ending March, compared to the same period last year. CEO Antonia Watson attributed this growth to a 4% increase in net profit.
Watson explained that the bank's business activities were hampered by persistently high inflation, restrictive interest rates, and rising unemployment in the latter half of last year. She also forecasted further challenges ahead, with expectations of higher unemployment rates and increased economic pressure on households and businesses due to an impending economic downturn.
Despite fluctuations in the real estate market, new home mortgage loans saw a $10.1 billion increase. However, most loan customers shifted to higher interest rates, with approximately 17% still maintaining rates below 5%.
CEO Watson emphasized a growing number of loan repayment defaults and a cautious approach among businesses and farms towards additional borrowing. She also noted a 2% increase in customer deposits during the same period, attributed to the movement of funds into fixed-term deposits.
Watson highlighted climate change as a primary concern for ANZ NZ, stressing the bank's commitment to minimizing its impact on customers and enhancing resilience. Additionally, she mentioned ongoing investments in technology and efforts to combat cybercrime.
Meanwhile, ANZ Group, the parent company of ANZ NZ, reported flat revenue for the first half, matching the previous year's figures, but recorded a 4% decrease in net profit, amounting to $3.41 billion.
According to CEO Watson, a report by the Commerce Commission revealed that the market structure and profitability of the top five domestic banks in New Zealand closely resemble those of banks in other countries.

뉴질랜드 최대 은행인 ANZ NZ가 올해 3월까지의 상반기 매출액이 지난해 같은 기간보다 1% 증가하고 순이익은 4% 늘어났다고 발표했다.
안토니아 왓슨 CEO는 지난해 하반기에 높게 유지된 인플레이션과 제한적인 기준금리, 실업률 증가 등으로 은행 영업 활동이 둔화했다고 설명했다. 또한 앞으로도 실업률이 더 높아질 것으로 예상되고 경기 침체로 인해 더 많은 가계와 기업이 영향을 받을 것으로 전망했다.
부동산 시장이 주춤했지만 주택 담보 대출은 신규 대출이 101억 달러 증가했다. 그러나 대출 고객 대부분은 더 높은 금리로 이동하였으며, 여전히 5% 미만 금리를 유지하는 고객도 약 17%에 달한다.
왓슨 CEO는 대출금 연체 고객 수가 증가하고 있으며 기업체와 농가가 추가 대출에 신중한 경향을 보이고 있다고 강조했다. 동시에 정기예금으로 돈을 이동한 고객이 늘어나면서 같은 기간에 고객 예금도 2% 증가했다고 밝혔다.
기후 변화는 ANZ NZ의 주요 과제로, 고객이 받는 영향을 줄이고 회복력을 높일 수 있도록 지원하고 있다고 왓슨 CEO는 강조했다. 또한 은행은 기술에 대한 투자와 사이버 범죄 대응에도 지속적으로 노력하고 있다.
한편 ANZ NZ의 모회사인 호주 ANZ 그룹은 상반기 매출은 지난해와 동일한 수치를 기록했으나 순이익은 4% 감소한 34억 1천만 달러를 기록했다.
왓슨 CEO는 상무위원회 보고서에 따르면, 국내 상위 5개 은행의 시장 구조와 수익성이 다른 국가의 은행 부문과 유사하다고 밝혔다.
