The New Zealand government has confirmed the reinstatement of mortgage interest deductions for rental housing as part of adjustments to the Labour Party's policies. Consequently, the deduction, which was abolished since 2021, will be reinstated, and under the new regulations, deductions for the tax year will be excluded from retrospective application.
Starting from April 1, 2024, landlords will be able to claim 80% of interest costs, and from April 1, 2025, they will be able to claim 100%. Seymour, spokesperson for the government, announced on March 10th, expressing expectations that the restoration of interest deductions would alleviate rent burdens and simplify tax regulations.
However, the Council of Trade Unions (CTU) argued to the contrary, claiming that interest costs would increase by $1 billion over four years, and hundreds of landlords would become millionaires due to tax deductions.
Labour Party leader Chris Hipkins criticized the government's decision, prioritizing tax cuts for wealthy landlords over family support such as public transportation fares. Meanwhile, the Inland Revenue Department opposed the Labour Party's stance on abolishing mortgage interest deductions, stating that while it could lower house prices, it could also increase rental pressures and reduce long-term supply of new housing developments.

뉴질랜드 정부는 노동당정부의 정책 조정으로 임대주택에 대한 모기지 이자공제를 재개하기로 확정했다. 이에 따라 2021년부터 폐지됐던 이자공제가 다시 시작되며, 새로운 규정에 따라 과세년도에 대한 이자공제는 소급 적용에서 배제된다.
2024년 4월 1일부터는 이자 비용의 80%를 청구할 수 있으며, 2025년 4월 1일부터는 100%를 청구할 수 있다고 밝혔다. 이에 대해 정부는 이자 공제복원이 렌트비 부담을 완화하고 세금 규정을 단순화할 것으로 기대한다고 시모어 대표가 3월 10일 발표했다.
그러나, 노동조합협의회(CTU)는 이와 달리 이자 비용이 4년 동안 10억 달러나 증가하고, 수백 명의 집주인이 세금 감면으로 인해 백만장자가 될 것이라고 주장했다.
이번 정부의 결정에 대해 노동당의 크리스 힙킨스 대표는 대중교통요금 등 가족 지원 대신 대형 부자 집주인에 대한 감세를 우선시하는 것이라며 비판했다. 한편, 국세청은 모기지 이자공제 폐지에 대한 노동당의 입장을 반대하며, 이는 주택가격을 낮출 수 있지만, 렌트비 상승 압력을 가하고 장기적으로 신규 주택 개발 공급을 줄일 수 있다고 밝혔다.
