Key banks in New Zealand such as ASB and Kiwibank have announced reductions in short-term mortgage rates and some cuts in term deposit rates. This move is poised to draw attention from homeowners and prospective buyers in the New Zealand housing market.

ASB Bank has adjusted its 6-month and 1-year fixed mortgage rates by 10bp and 5bp respectively, lowering them to 7.29% and 7.24%. Additionally, the 2-year mortgage rate has been reduced by 6bp to 6.79%. Adam, Chief Executive Officer of ASB's personal banking division, explained that these rate cuts would benefit fixed home loan customers selecting terms of 24 months or less.

Regarding savings, ASB Bank has decreased its 12-month term deposit rate to 6.00%, with other long-term deposit rates also experiencing cuts ranging from 5 to 20bp.

Meanwhile, Kiwibank has also adjusted its fixed home loan rates. Special fixed rates at Kiwibank have been lowered across various terms from 6 months to 5 years. Special fixed rates requiring a minimum of 20% equity are gaining attention among homebuyers.

These rate adjustments appear to be in response to the recent decline in retail swap rates. With the Reserve Bank of New Zealand maintaining its OCR at 5.5% at the end of February, major banks are seen injecting more vigor into the housing market.
