Tauranga in New Zealand is seen stepping back from nearly three decades of growth, facing competition from neighboring cities. According to Statistics New Zealand, Tauranga, including Mount Maunganui and Papamoa, has experienced a deceleration in growth compared to nearby Hamilton.
The latest population estimates and predictions from June 30, 2022, to June 30, 2023, indicate that Hamilton has grown by 3.4%, while Tauranga has grown by 2.5%. Southgate Market in Hamilton introduced the city as "our great riverside city," mentioning that more families and businesses are choosing the location for its appeal.
However, dealing with growth and housing shortages due to robust population increase in the city requires the construction of 1,300 new homes every year for the next ten years, according to Mayor Southgate. The development of the new Peacock area in the southern part of the city can accommodate up to 20,000 people, but financial challenges are hindering the achievement of this goal.
There is a call for collaboration between local and central governments, emphasizing the need for significant investments in infrastructure. As a result, Hamilton has also shown rapid growth in 2022-2023, intensifying the competition in the growth rate between cities.
While Bay of Plenty cities have recorded the highest growth rates, Tauranga has garnered attention with a 2.6% annual average growth over the last five years. At the same time, Hamilton recorded a 1.9% growth, and the competition between cities for growth continues to be fierce.
