According to an announcement made by New Zealand's Serious Fraud Office (SFO) on Monday, an investigation has been initiated into the now-closed digital asset exchange, Dasset, which faced liquidation last year. The investigation aims to uncover any fraudulent activities associated with the closure of the cryptocurrency trading platform.
In August 2023, Digital Asset Exchange Ltd (Dasset) was liquidated due to severe management issues. The company provided services allowing users to trade over 90 digital assets in New Zealand dollars.
Stephen McCaskill, the CEO of Dasset, explained that the company faced difficulties after failing to find a new partner following the discontinuation of collaboration with a previous banking service provider. According to reports from the auditor Grant, this was attributed to the depreciation in the value of digital assets.
At the time of liquidation, there were approximately 5,000 registered users who were unable to access their accounts post-closure.
The investigation was initiated by the Financial Markets Authority, and the Serious Fraud Office has disclosed that the probe is currently expanding. A spokesperson for the SFO encouraged anyone possessing information related to Dasset or individuals who were customers of the exchange to reach out to sfo.govt.nz at any time.
