In the upcoming monetary policy meeting this month, the Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) is expected to keep the benchmark interest rate unchanged at the current 5.5%.
Stephen Toplis, Head of Research at BNZ, suggested, "There is a higher likelihood of RBNZ considering a rate hike rather than a rate cut, but this could be a mistake." He forecasted that RBNZ is likely to maintain the interest rate at its current level in the monetary policy meeting scheduled for the 28th of this month.
Despite a recent significant slowdown in inflation in New Zealand, it continues to hover around RBNZ's target range of 1-3%.
The Consumer Price Index (CPI) for the fourth quarter in New Zealand rose by 4.7% compared to the previous year, marking a significant deceleration from the 5.6% in the preceding quarter.
Adrian Orr, Governor of RBNZ, previously indicated, "Inflation is still too high," hinting at the possibility of continuing the trend of interest rate hikes.
However, Toplis cautioned, "Considering the weakening employment market, increasing idle production capacity, and the ongoing inflation deceleration, a decision to raise interest rates could be a policy mistake."
As a result, there is a prevailing expectation that RBNZ is likely to keep the current interest rate unchanged until 2025.

뉴질랜드 중앙은행(RBNZ)은 이번 달 통화 정책 회의에서 기준금리를 현재의 5.5%로 동결할 것으로 예상되고 있다.
BNZ의 스테판 토필스 리서치 헤드는 "RBNZ는 금리 인하보다는 금리 인상 가능성이 높지만, 이는 실수가 될 것"이라며 RBNZ가 이달 28일 있는 통화 정책 회의에서 금리를 현 수준으로 유지할 가능성이 크다고 전망했다.
뉴질랜드의 인플레이션은 최근 크게 둔화했지만 여전히 RBNZ의 물가 목표치 1~3%를 웃돌고 있다.
뉴질랜드의 4분기 소비자 물가 지수(CPI)는 전년 대비 4.7% 올라 직전 분기의 5.6%에서 크게 둔화했다.
에어드리언 오어 RBNZ 총재는 앞서 "인플레이션이 여전히 너무 높다"며 금리 인상 기조를 이어갈 수 있음을 시사한 바 있다.
그러나 토필스 헤드는 "뉴질랜드의 고용 시장이 둔화하고 있으며, 유휴 생산 여력이 늘고 있으며, 인플레이션이 둔화하고 있음을 고려한다면 금리 인상 결정은 정책적 실수가 될 것"이라고 지적했다.
이에 따라 RBNZ가 현재의 금리를 2025년까지 동결할 가능성이 크다는 전망이 나왔다.
