New Zealand Experts Advocate for Calls for ultra-processed food tax to protect unborn children
Concerns about the negative impact of consuming unhealthy foods during pregnancy on the mental health of children have led mental health experts in New Zealand to call for a tax on processed foods.
According to New Zealand media, Professors Julia Rucklidge of the University of Canterbury and Roger Mulder of the University of Otago have published a report in the New Zealand Medical Journal, emphasizing that what pregnant women should avoid eating is more critical for the mental health of fetuses than what they should consume.
Processed foods, which include items like candies, commercial cookies, carbonated drinks, sausages, and chicken nuggets, are foods manufactured with added coloring, flavoring, preservatives, and other additives.
Professor Rucklidge explained in an interview with the press that numerous studies have indicated that the consumption of processed foods is a significant factor negatively affecting the mental health of children. She emphasized the deep connection between not consuming healthy foods during pregnancy and the increased likelihood of children experiencing depression and anxiety.
Additionally, Professor Rucklidge pointed out findings from other studies in New Zealand, revealing that children continue to consume a significant amount of processed foods even after birth. On average, the energy intake from processed foods reaches 45% at 12 months, 42% at 24 months, and 51% at 60 months of age.
Professor Julia Rucklidge highlighted a concerning trend over the past decade, stating that the diagnosis of emotional or behavioral issues among boys aged 2 to 14 has increased from 4.4% to 8.6%, while among girls, it has risen from 2.1% to 3.8%. The numbers have surged from 26,000 to 53,000 cases.
While acknowledging that education can change lifestyle habits, Professor Rucklidge stressed the need for policy interventions such as taxing sugar and fat to address these issues, acknowledging that it requires both money and time.
