The Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) has decided to maintain the Official Cash Rate (OCR) at 5.5% on the 4th, according to reports from CNBC and MarketWatch. The Reserve Bank of New Zealand held the benchmark interest rate steady for the third consecutive time in a financial policy decision meeting held, continuing the trend since July.
In a statement, the Reserve Bank pointed out that "interest rates are restraining economic activity and easing inflationary pressures." However, they also highlighted that "inflation rates still remain at elevated levels," emphasizing the need to restrain spending in line with the economy's capacity to supply goods and services.
This decision marks the sixth instance of maintaining the benchmark interest rate through the annual seven financial policy decision meetings, following the rate hike in October 2021.
Since the rate increase in October 2021, taking the rate from 0.25% in August to the current 15-year high of 5.5%, New Zealand's real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) for the April to June quarter exceeded market expectations by rising 0.9% compared to the previous quarter. This growth is attributed to continued influxes of students and immigrants from Australia, driving increases in housing prices and fuel costs.
The Reserve Bank analyzed, "New Zealand's economic growth is still subdued," and market expectations suggest a low likelihood of additional rate hikes at the last policy meeting of November this year. ANZ Bank anticipates a further 0.25% point increase in the benchmark interest rate, expressing concerns about the adverse effects on New Zealand's exports due to a decline in prices of dairy products, a key export, amid fears of China's economic slowdown.
The Reserve Bank warned, "A decrease in demand from China could pull down commodity prices, putting pressure on both exports and imports."
