New Zealand's New Home Building consents Decline by 17% Through August
New Zealand, October 4 - The issuance of new home building consents in New Zealand recorded a total of 42,110 units through August of the past year, marking a 17% decrease compared to the same period last year. Based on data released on October 2nd (Monday) by Statistics New Zealand, a spokesperson explained that the trend of declining new home building consents has persisted since the annual peak of 51,015 units recorded up to May of the previous year. However, the cumulative record until August of this year still surpasses levels seen before 2021.
Breaking down by housing type, detached homes decreased by 25% to 17,267 units compared to the previous year, while multi-unit dwellings including townhouses, apartments, and retirement villages decreased by 10% to a total of 24,843 units, showing a relatively lower rate of decline than detached homes.
Within multi-unit dwellings, townhouses and flats/units decreased by 12% to 18,158 units compared to the previous year, apartments decreased by 7.2% to 3,801 units, and retirement villages increased by 2.4% to 2,884 units.
Looking at the regions, all areas except Marlborough saw a decrease in the number of permits through August. Among them, Auckland, with the highest number of permits at 18,003 units, experienced a 16% decrease. Canterbury decreased by 15% to 7,406 units, Waikato decreased by 22% to 3,981 units, and Wellington also showed a 16% decrease to 3,267 units compared to the same period last year.
In statistics for August alone, there was a notable 30% decrease, totaling 3,170 units compared to August of the previous year. The statistician pointed out that this marks the lowest figure for August in the past three years. In August, multi-unit dwellings decreased by 26% to 1,927 units compared to the same period last year, while detached homes showed a more significant decrease, down by 35% to 1,243 units. Considering seasonally adjusted figures, the number of permits in August decreased by 6.7% compared to July, and July itself saw a 5.4% decrease from the previous month.
