The roads in the South Wairarapa region are gradually succumbing to the sea, posing a risk of complete isolation for those dependent on these routes, as reported by RNZ. This stretch, part of Te Awaiti Road connecting the northern coastline from Awhea River Mouth in Tora, South Wairarapa, is mostly gravel, narrow, and winding. It is currently deteriorating rapidly, with a complete collapse deemed inevitable.
Last year, a transport truck got stranded on this road, and it took half a day to rescue it. Now, a local farmer fears that if the road disappears into the sea, he and others will be completely cut off. Den Redford, the fifth-generation farmer at Te Awaiti Station, insists that a southern access road is essential, as there is no route north. Despite requesting on-site meetings, Redford's appeals to council executives have gone unanswered.
He claims to have emphasized the need for on-site meetings with decision-makers and neighbors through repeated emails. The road manager acknowledges ongoing repair work due to the road drying up, stabilizing against landslides. However, Redford points out that the problem has persisted for three to four years.
Questions posed to the council include maintaining the road to a reasonable standard, allowing free passage for trucks and trailers. Redford inquired about plans for repairing Gluepot if it collapses into the sea and emergency off-road plans if the road erodes into the sea. However, the council seems to lack substantial measures.
Martinborough Transport, a local trucking company servicing rural communities, regularly sends large vehicles on local roads. Spokesperson Josh Hawkins states that Gluepot Road is one of several problematic roads in South Wairarapa. He mentions an incident a year ago when one of the company's trucks got stuck on Gluepot Road, taking half a day to resolve. Hawkins notes occasional issues with other roads in the area, including White Rock Road, Tora Road, Hinakura Road, and Ushers Hill. He suggests checking the roads, particularly Usshers Hill, before sending trucks, referring to it as another road disappearing into the sea. According to him, Cape Palliser Rd is continually shifting, and scouting trips are necessary for some roads before use.
Hawkins opines that there seems to be a lack of regular maintenance on some South Wairarapa roads. Tim Wrangle, the road manager at South Wairarapa District Council (SWDC), claims that efforts are being made by the council to address the issue. He identifies Gluepot on Te Awaiti Road as one of at least four major ongoing landslip-prone roads in South Wairarapa. Wrangle assures that requests and concerns from residents were addressed during winter and promises continued updates on future repairs.
