Recent surveys reveal that, despite the ongoing cost-of-living crisis, more than half of the population remains committed to saving for retirement. This demonstrates the resilience of many individuals amid economic hardships, according to the Retirement Commission.

The latest research released by the Retirement Commission shows that over half of the 3,000 respondents reported feeling "uncomfortable" with their financial situation. This discomfort is particularly pronounced among women and individuals aged 18 to 35.

Tom Hartman, the Retirement Commission’s Director of Personal Finance, stated, "The financial difficulties faced by women have worsened significantly, with the percentage experiencing economic stress rising from 51% in 2022 to 64% today." He added, "While it is concerning to see New Zealanders struggling financially, it is encouraging to observe a growing commitment to long-term savings."

The study indicates that the proportion of people saving for retirement and long-term financial goals has increased from 54% in 2022 to 59%. This reflects a sustained commitment to financial planning despite economic instability.

Additionally, the findings reveal that New Zealanders, particularly those aged 18 to 34 and the Pacifica community, show a tendency to reduce debt and favor saving over borrowing. Nearly 76% of respondents prefer saving for high-value purchases rather than taking on debt.
