New Zealand Food Prices Shift Back to Upward Trend

 

New Zealand’s food prices rose by 0.6% year-on-year through July, reversing a previous downward trend and marking a month-on-month increase. This shift contrasts with the 0.3% decline observed through June.

According to the latest inflation data released by Statistics New Zealand on August 15, the increase in food prices is attributed primarily to a 3.7% annual rise in restaurant meals and ready-to-eat foods. Despite this overall increase, the prices for fruits and vegetables fell by 8.5% year-on-year, while meat, poultry, and fish also experienced a 1.1% decrease.

Notably, the price drops for key vegetables such as potatoes, lettuce, and sweet potatoes have significantly contributed to the overall decline in fruit and vegetable prices. Sweet potatoes, for instance, reached a peak of $14.25 per kilogram in January but had fallen to $5.72 by July, marking a reduction of nearly two-thirds.

For the month of July alone, food prices increased by 0.4% compared to the previous month. The rise in fruit and vegetable prices, which climbed by 4.5%, had a substantial impact on the overall food price increase. Even when adjusted for seasonal factors, fruit and vegetable prices saw a 0.8% rise. Seasonal fruits and vegetables such as tomatoes, cucumbers, and apples saw notable price increases in July.

Meanwhile, gasoline and diesel prices fell by 0.5% and 0.2%, respectively, in July. This decline is attributed to the removal of the 10-cent per liter fuel tax in the Auckland region as of June 30. Although fuel prices generally decreased, all regions outside of Auckland experienced an upward trend in fuel costs.

감자, 상추, 고구마 등 주요 채소의 가격 하락이 과일과 채소 부문에서의 전반적인 가격 하락을 이끌었다. 특히 고구마는 올해 1월 kg당 14.25달러로 최고가를 기록했으나, 7월에는 5.72달러로 떨어져 가격이 약 ⅓ 수준으로 감소했다.

7월 한 달 동안 식료품 물가는 전월 대비 0.4% 상승했다. 특히 과일과 채소 가격이 4.5% 오르며 물가 상승에 큰 영향을 미쳤으며, 계절적 요인을 고려한 조정치에서도 과일과 채소 가격은 0.8% 상승한 것으로 나타났다. 7월에는 토마토, 오이, 사과 등 계절 과일과 채소 가격이 눈에 띄게 상승했다.

한편, 7월의 휘발유와 경유 가격은 각각 0.5%, 0.2% 하락했는데, 이는 오클랜드 지역에서 부과되던 리터당 10센트의 연료세가 6월 30일부로 폐지된 결과로 분석된다. 전체적으로는 연료 가격이 하락했으나, 오클랜드를 제외한 나머지 지역에서는 연료 가격이 상승세를 기록했다.
