New Zealand's economy appears to be on a gradual path to recovery, according to recent projections. RNZ reports that with inflation and interest rates stabilizing, the economic outlook is gradually improving.

The latest quarterly forecast from ASB indicates that economic growth is expected to stagnate or decline for the remainder of the year. Globally, economic growth rates remain below average, continuing a subdued trend. During two of the past six quarters, GDP contracted, showing a 0.5% decrease from the peak in 2022. Per capita GDP fell by more than 4%, negatively impacting the economy.

ASB’s Chief Economist Nick Tuffley highlighted the vulnerabilities in the economy due to high interest rates but maintained a positive outlook for the future. Tuffley stated, “Despite the current challenging conditions, inflation is under control, and recent encouraging signs suggest that inflation will fall below 3% in the latter half of this year.” He added, “We expect inflation control to persist beyond 2024.”

Last week, the central bank lowered the official cash rate by 25 basis points to 5.25%, with expectations for further rate cuts in the near future. Tuffley anticipates that the reduction in rates will stimulate consumer and investment spending, serving as a catalyst for economic recovery in 2025. He noted, “While household spending remains somewhat under pressure, 2024 is showing a better start compared to 2023.”

In light of global economic recovery and interest rate cuts by the U.S. Federal Reserve, there are also forecasts for an appreciation of the New Zealand dollar (NZD). Tuffley projected, “The NZD is expected to gradually rise, reaching 70 cents by March 2027.” However, he cautioned that if the Reserve Bank of New Zealand cuts rates ahead of the U.S. Federal Reserve, the NZD might face short-term pressure and could fall slightly below 0.90 against the Australian dollar. He explained, “Australia’s relative economic performance is increasingly being reflected in interest rates.”

중앙은행은 지난주 공식 현금 금리를 25베이시스포인트 인하하여 5.25%로 조정했으며, 향후 금리 인하가 계속될 것이라는 전망이 나오고 있다. 터플리는 금리 인하가 소비자와 투자 지출을 촉진하고, 2025년 경제 회복의 촉매제가 될 것으로 예상하고 있다. 그는 “가계 지출이 여전히 어느 정도 압박을 받고 있지만, 2024년은 2023년에 비해 좋은 출발을 보이고 있다”고 전했다.

글로벌 경제 성장 회복과 미국 연방준비제도의 금리 인하에 따라 뉴질랜드 달러(NZD)의 상승 전망도 제기됐다. 터플리는 “2025년에는 NZD가 점진적으로 상승할 것으로 예상되며, 2027년 3월까지 70센트에 도달할 것으로 보인다”고 밝혔다. 그러나 뉴질랜드 중앙은행이 미국 연방준비제도보다 먼저 금리를 인하할 경우 단기적으로 NZD가 압박을 받을 수 있으며, NZD가 호주 달러에 비해 약간 낮은 수준으로 하락할 여지가 있다고 덧붙였다. 그는 “호주의 상대적 경제 성과가 점점 더 금리에 반영되고 있다”고 설명했다.
