The primary reasons behind this exodus among young New Zealanders include high unemployment rates, rising living costs, and expensive housing. According to a report by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), New Zealand’s economic growth rate was just 0.6% last year, with a forecasted growth rate of only 1.0% for this year. Additionally, the unemployment rate hit 4.7% in the second quarter, and the benchmark interest rate stands at 5.5%. The right-wing coalition government that took power last year has been restructuring public sector jobs to improve fiscal health. Brad Olson, Chief Economist at Infometrics, noted, "For many young New Zealanders, leaving for overseas after graduation has become a rite of passage. If this trend continues, it could lead to 'brain drain' and aging population issues."

The increase in young New Zealanders moving to Australia has raised concerns about the potential for permanent migration. Australia's average weekly earnings are approximately 30% higher than those in New Zealand, and Australian companies are actively hiring New Zealand youth with attractive wages and better working conditions. Michael Gordon, Chief Economist at Westpac Bank in Australia, predicted, “As New Zealand's economy cools, more New Zealanders will seek employment opportunities in the relatively stronger Australian job market.”

또한, 호주로 향하는 뉴질랜드 청년들이 늘어나면서 영구 이주 가능성도 제기되고 있다. 호주의 주당 평균 소득은 뉴질랜드보다 약 30% 높은 수준이며, 호주 기업들은 높은 임금과 더 나은 근무 조건을 제시하며 뉴질랜드 청년들을 적극적으로 채용하고 있다. 호주 은행 웨스트팩의 마이클 고든 수석 이코노미스트는 “뉴질랜드 경제가 냉각되면서 상대적으로 경제가 강한 호주로 향하는 뉴질랜드인들이 더욱 늘어날 것”이라고 전망했다.
