Increase in Foreign Visitors Yet Still Below Pre-Pandemic Levels

 

As of June this year, the number of international visitors to New Zealand has risen by 27% compared to the same period last year, reaching a total of 3.2 million. According to data released by the Statistics Department on August 13, this represents an increase of approximately 676,000 visitors from the previous year.

However, this figure still falls short by 17% compared to the 3.9 million annual visitors recorded before the pandemic in 2019. The country has yet to return to pre-pandemic visitor levels.

Key contributing countries include China, the United States, and Australia, with notable increases in visitors from these regions compared to last year. Australia leads with the highest proportion of visitors, followed by the United States and China. The United Kingdom and India also feature among the top five source countries, with Indian visitors showing a remarkable 130% increase compared to pre-pandemic levels.

Conversely, visitors from the United States have reached 103% of the 2019 levels, while those from Australia and the United Kingdom have decreased to 86% and 73%, respectively. Chinese visitors have dropped to 55% of the pre-pandemic figure. The statistics encompass foreign visitors staying in New Zealand for less than 12 months and include both citizens and non-citizens.

올해 지난 6월까지 뉴질랜드를 방문한 외국인 수가 지난해 같은 기간에 비해 27% 증가하며 총 320만 명에 달했다. 이는 통계국이 8월 13일 발표한 자료에 의하면, 지난해 같은 시점에 비해 약 67만 6천 명이 더 늘어난 수치다.

그러나 이 수치는 2019년 팬데믹 이전의 연간 방문객 수인 390만 명에 비해 여전히 17% 부족한 것으로 나타났다. 팬데믹 이전 수준을 회복하지 못한 상황이다.

주요 방문국으로는 중국, 미국, 호주가 있으며, 이들 국가에서 온 방문객이 지난해에 비해 눈에 띄게 증가했다. 특히 호주 출신 방문객이 가장 많은 비율을 차지하며, 미국과 중국이 뒤를 이었다. 영국과 인도도 상위 5개국에 포함되었으며, 인도 출신 방문객은 팬데믹 이전보다 130% 증가한 것으로 집계됐다.

반면, 미국 출신 방문객은 2019년 대비 103%, 호주와 영국 출신은 각각 86%와 73%로 감소했으며, 중국 출신은 55%로 떨어졌다. 이번 통계는 뉴질랜드에 12개월 미만 체류하는 외국인 방문객 수를 기준으로 하며, 뉴질랜드 시민과 비시민 모두를 포함한 수치이다.
