New Zealand Sees Record 130,000 Leave for Overseas in One Year

 

Over the past year, a record 130,000 people have relocated from New Zealand to overseas destinations, according to data released by Statistics New Zealand on August 13. The report reveals that as of June this year, a total of 131,223 people moved abroad, the highest number on record.

Among these emigrants, 80,174 were New Zealand citizens, with approximately 40% of them aged between 18 and 30. Many of these young people chose Australia as their primary destination. During the same period, 204,492 people immigrated to New Zealand, resulting in a net migration figure of 73,270.

New Zealand experienced a surge in net migration following the easing of the COVID-19 pandemic and the re-opening of borders at the end of 2022. By October last year, the annual net migration figure had reached approximately 140,000. However, recent trends show a significant increase in the number of people leaving, causing the net migration number to halve.

Experts attribute this emigration trend to New Zealand's high unemployment rate, elevated interest rates, and the high cost of living. According to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), New Zealand's economic growth rate was just 0.6% last year, and it is projected to be only 1.0% this year. The unemployment rate stands at 4.7%, with the benchmark interest rate reaching 5.5%. Additionally, the right-wing coalition government, which took office last year, has been restructuring public sector jobs, contributing to economic instability.

Brad Olson, chief economist at Infometrics, warns that the trend of young New Zealanders moving abroad is becoming a rite of passage, potentially exacerbating issues related to "brain drain" and aging demographics. High wages and better working conditions in Australia are significant factors driving this emigration, indicating a shift from temporary moves to permanent relocation. Michael Gordon, chief economist at Westpac Bank, anticipates that as New Zealand's economy cools, there will be an increase in migration to the relatively stronger Australian job market.

통계에 따르면 이주자 중 8만174명은 뉴질랜드 시민권자로, 이 중 약 40%는 18세에서 30세 사이의 청년층이다. 이들 중 상당수는 호주를 주요 이주지로 선택했다. 또한, 같은 기간 동안 20만4천492명이 뉴질랜드로 이민을 왔으며, 순이민자 수는 7만3천270명으로 집계됐다.

뉴질랜드는 코로나19 팬데믹 완화와 함께 2022년 말 국경을 재개방하고 외국인 근로자 유치를 장려하면서 순이민자가 빠르게 증가했다. 지난해 10월 기준으로 연간 순이민자 수는 약 14만 명에 달했으나, 최근에는 떠나는 인원이 급증하면서 순이민자 수가 절반 수준으로 감소했다.

전문가들은 뉴질랜드의 높은 실업률과 높은 금리, 비싼 생활비 등이 이주를 촉발하는 주요 요인이라고 분석하고 있다. 국제통화기금(IMF)에 따르면, 지난해 뉴질랜드의 경제 성장률은 0.6%에 불과했으며, 올해도 1.0%에 머물 것으로 보인다. 실업률은 4.7%에 달하고 기준금리는 5.5%에 이른다. 또한, 지난해 취임한 우파 연합 정부는 공공 부문 일자리 구조조정을 추진하고 있어 경제적 불안정성이 커지고 있다.

인포매트릭스의 브래드 올슨 수석 이코노미스트는 뉴질랜드 청년층의 해외 이주는 일종의 통과의례가 되고 있으며, 이로 인해 ‘두뇌 유출’과 고령화 문제가 심화될 수 있다고 경고했다. 호주의 높은 임금과 근무 조건이 청년층의 주요 이주 이유로 지목되고 있으며, 이는 일시적인 이동이 아닌 영구 이주를 의미할 수 있다. 호주 은행 웨스트팩의 마이클 고든 수석 이코노미스트는 “뉴질랜드 경제의 냉각과 함께 상대적으로 강한 호주 경제로의 이동이 증가할 것”이라고 전망했다.
