Warkworth Housing Development Paused Due to Delay in Sewage Treatment Facility Construction
The development of new housing in the Warkworth area of Auckland has been paused until a new sewage treatment facility is constructed.
With the capacity of the existing sewage treatment plant located on the Mahurangi River nearly at its limit, properties to the south of the river cannot connect to sewage facilities until a new facility is completed at Snells Beach. While the completion of the new facility is scheduled for the latter half of 2025, the actual availability for residency may be delayed by several years due to the need for a new pipeline for development to the north of the river.
Auckland City Council has designated Warkworth as a 'satellite city', anticipating an increase of over 20,000 residents in the area in the coming decades.
Concerns have been raised by traders regarding the construction route passing through Warkworth's main thoroughfare. Priam Pereira, Chief Executive Officer of Watercare, has indicated consideration for the pipeline's urban passage, emphasizing the importance of finding a "balance" between the short-term impacts of the work and the long-term development of infrastructure.
The Council's Resource Consent Manager stated that developers wishing to proceed with development in Warkworth must first contact Watercare. While the Council still holds the authority to approve development applications, it has stipulated that development commencement is contingent upon approval of sewage infrastructure connection by Watercare.

오클랜드 워크워스(Warkworth) 지역의 신규 주택 개발이 새로운 폐수 처리 시설이 건설될 때까지 중단된다.
마후랑기(Mahurangi) 강에 위치한 기존 폐수 처리장의 용량이 거의 다 차면서, 강 남쪽 부동산은 스넬스 비치(Snells Beach)에 새로운 폐수 처리 시설이 완공되기 전까지 폐수 시설을 연결할 수 없다. 새로운 시설의 완공은 2025년 중후반으로 예정되어 있으나, 강 북쪽 개발을 위해 새로운 파이프라인을 설치해야 하므로 실제 거주 가능 시기는 몇 년 더 소요될 수 있다.
오클랜드 시의회는 워크워스를 ‘위성도시’로 지정하며, 향후 수십 년 안에 이 지역에 2만 명 이상의 인구 증가를 예상하고 있다.
워크워스 주요도로를 통과하는 공사 경로에 대한 상인들의 우려가 제기되는 가운데, Watercare의 최고책임자 프리안 페레라(Priam Pereira)는 파이프라인의 도시 통과를 고려하고 있으며, 작업의 단기적 영향과 인프라의 장기적 개발 사이에서 “균형”을 찾는 것이 중요하다고 밝혔다.
오클랜드 시의회의 자원 동의 관리자는 워크워스에서 개발을 희망하는 이들이 먼저 워터케어에 연락해야 한다고 말했다. 시의회는 여전히 개발 신청을 승인할 권한을 가지고 있지만, 워터케어의 폐수 인프라 연결이 승인되기 전까지는 개발 착수를 조건부로 한다고 밝혔다.
