The New Zealand government announced on Monday its decision to reinstate the "Three strikes policy" to ensure severe punishment for serious crimes. Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and Justice Minister Nicole McKee emphasized that this measure aims to strengthen community safety.
Under the reinstated law, individuals committing the same serious offense three times will face escalated penalties, applicable for sentences exceeding two years. Judges will have greater discretion in determining the severity of sentences. Additionally, if a perpetrator is found guilty of the same offense for the third time, mitigating circumstances may be considered during sentencing.
The move has garnered support from Family First NZ, who welcomed the decision as a step towards protecting New Zealand households from violent crimes. According to a 2023 public opinion survey, 66% of citizens expressed support for the "Three Strikes Policy."
Bob McCoskrie, spokesperson for Family First NZ, remarked, "The effectiveness of the "Three Strikes Policy" in reducing recidivism has been demonstrated. Perpetrators are acutely aware of the law and its consequences."
He further added that such measures would aid in addressing issues like domestic violence, firearm offenses, and sexual assault.
This decision is perceived as part of the New Zealand government's efforts to prevent crime and enhance social safety. It is expected to contribute to the safety and stability of local communities.
