New Zealanders' Concerns Persist on 'Inflation and Cost of Living'
According to the results of a recent opinion poll conducted last month, the support for the National Party, leading the new coalition government, was tallied at 4.6%. This support level closely mirrors that of the Labour Party government just before the general election.
The 'IPSOS NZ Issues Monitor' survey, conducted from February 20th to 29th, targeted 1,001 New Zealanders to gauge their perceptions of the most concerning issues and the parties they believe can address these concerns.
The survey revealed that the issue of 'inflation and cost of living,' which has consistently been deemed significant since February 2022, is gradually declining in importance. Conversely, the issue of 'crime and law and order' has significantly decreased in prominence since May 2022, emerging as the fourth most important issue.
Meanwhile, concerns regarding 'housing and accommodation costs' and 'healthcare and hospitals' are jointly regarded as the second most important, while 'economy' is perceived as the fifth most significant issue.
Recent trends indicate a growing concern in major areas such as transportation, public transit, unemployment, defense/foreign affairs/terrorism, and issues concerning the Maori community. Particularly, Maori respondents have shown a special interest in these issues.
The comprehensive evaluation score of the new coalition government stands at 4.6 out of 10, which is lower than the 4.7 score of the Labour Party government just before the last general election. The proportion of respondents awarding scores ranging from 0 to 3 has increased, as indicated by the survey results.
Nevertheless, respondents continue to believe that the National Party is the best party to address these issues. Confidence in the National Party's ability to handle issues such as inflation/cost of living, healthcare/hospitals, crime/law and order, and the economy is growing, according to the survey.
Prime Minister Christopher Luxon mentioned in a media interview that respondents supporting the National Party's ability to address citizens' concerns are encouraging. The government is focusing on these issues and is in the process of developing strategies through its 100-day plan.
On the other hand, the Labour Party is perceived as the most suitable party for managing issues related to poverty/inequality and race relations/racial discrimination, while the Green Party is evaluated as being most effective in managing climate change and pollution.
Lastly, although concerns about gasoline prices and fuel have decreased over the past six months, worries about transportation and public transit have increased, as revealed by the survey.

지난 달에 실시된 여론조사 결과에 따르면, 새로운 연합 정부에 대한 국민당의 지지율이 4.6%로 집계됐다. 이 지지율은 총선 직전 노동당 정부의 것과 유사한 수준을 보였다.
2월 20일부터 29일까지 진행된 'IPSOS NZ Issues Monitor' 조사는 뉴질랜드인 1,001명을 대상으로 이뤄졌다. 조사 결과, 국민들이 가장 우려하는 문제와 해당 문제를 해결할 수 있는 정당에 대한 인식을 파악하기 위해 진행됐다.
조사 결과, 2022년 2월 이후로 계속해서 중요시되어 온 '인플레이션과 생활비' 문제는 점차 하락하고 있으며, '범죄 및 법과 질서' 문제는 2022년 5월 이후 크게 감소해 네 번째로 중요한 이슈로 부상했다.
한편, '주택과 주거 비용' 및 '의료와 병원' 문제는 공동으로 두 번째로 중요하게 여겨지고 있으며, '경제' 문제는 다섯 번째로 인식되고 있다.
특히 근래에는 교통, 대중교통, 실업, 국방/외교/테러, 그리고 마오리 문제 등과 같은 주요 분야에 대한 우려가 늘어나고 있으며, 특히 마오리 응답자들은 이에 특별한 관심을 보이고 있다.
새 연합 정부의 종합 평가 점수는 10점 만점에 4.6점에 불과했다. 이는 지난해 총선 직전 노동당 정부의 4.7점보다 낮은 수준이며, 0~3점을 부여한 응답자 비율이 늘어났다는 것이 조사 결과로 나타났다.
그럼에도 불구하고 응답자들은 문제를 해결할 수 있는 가장 좋은 정당은 국민당이라고 여전히 믿고 있다. 인플레이션/생활비, 의료/병원, 범죄/법률 및 질서, 경제 문제를 다루는 국민당의 능력에 대한 신뢰도가 높아지고 있는 것으로 조사됐다.
크리스토퍼 럭슨 총리는 언론 인터뷰에서 국민들의 우려 사항에 대해 국민당의 대처 능력을 지지하는 응답자들을 언급했다. 이에 대해 정부는 문제에 집중하고 있으며, 100일 계획을 통해 대책을 마련하고 있다고 말했다.
한편, 노동당은 빈곤/불평등, 인종 관계/인종차별 문제를 관리하는 데 가장 적합한 정당으로 인식되며, 녹색당은 기후 변화와 오염을 가장 효과적으로 관리할 것으로 평가되고 있다.
마지막으로, 휘발유 가격과 연료에 대한 우려는 최근 6개월간 감소했지만, 교통과 대중교통에 대한 우려는 오히려 증가하고 있음을 조사가 나타내고 있다.
