Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Expresses Position on New Zealand Visit Regarding AUKUS Participation
During his visit to New Zealand, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang emphasized China's stance on issues including Taiwan and the South China Sea, urging consideration of mutual interests.
According to the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Minister Wang conveyed this position during his meeting with New Zealand Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Winston Peters in the capital, Wellington.
Despite New Zealand considering participation in AUKUS (the US, UK, Australia security alliance), China has expressed opposition, as reported by Australian news agency AAP on the 19th.
Deputy Prime Minister Peters stated that the issue of New Zealand's AUKUS membership was discussed with Minister Wang. While Minister Wang expressed opposition to New Zealand's AUKUS membership, Peters argued that each country has the right to organize defense agreements.
Additionally, Peters emphasized to Minister Wang that New Zealand will choose its alliances considering its own situation.
Currently, New Zealand is evaluating the possibility of joining the AUKUS alliance, which is divided into sectors for providing nuclear-powered submarine technology from the US and UK to Australia and sharing advanced military technology.
However, some are concerned that New Zealand's relationship with China may become precarious if it joins AUKUS.
China is New Zealand's largest trading partner, accounting for about a quarter of its total exports, with the two countries signing a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) in 2008.
Deputy Prime Minister Peters stated, "We don't believe our most important trading relationship will be endangered."
The visit of the Chinese Foreign Minister to New Zealand marks the first since 2017.

뉴질랜드를 방문한 중국의 왕 외교부장이 대만 및 남중국해 문제를 비롯한 중국의 입장을 강조하고 상호 이익을 고려할 것을 당부했다.
중국 외교부에 따르면, 왕 부장은 뉴질랜드 수도 웰링턴에서 윈스턴 피터스 뉴질랜드 부총리 겸 외교장관과의 회담에서 이러한 입장을 전달했다.
뉴질랜드가 오커스(AUKUS: 미국, 영국, 호주 안보 동맹)에 참여할 것을 검토하고 있음에도 불구하고, 중국은 그에 반대한다는 입장을 밝혔다고 호주 AAP 통신 등이 19일 보도했다.
피터스 부총리는 왕 주임과의 회담에서, 뉴질랜드의 오커스 가입 문제가 논의되었다고 밝혔다. 왕 주임은 뉴질랜드의 오커스 가입에 반대한다는 입장을 표명했지만, 피터스 부총리는 각국이 방위 협정을 조직할 권리가 있다고 주장했다.
또한, 왕 주임에게 뉴질랜드는 자국 상황을 고려하여 동맹을 선택할 것을 분명히 했다고 덧붙였다.
현재 뉴질랜드는 오커스 동맹 합류 가능성을 평가 중에 있다. 오커스는 미국과 영국이 호주에 핵 추진 잠수함 기술을 제공하는 부문과 첨단 군사 분야 기술을 공유하는 부문으로 구분된다.
그러나 일부는 뉴질랜드가 오커스에 가입할 경우 중국과의 관계가 위험해질 수 있다고 우려하고 있다.
중국은 뉴질랜드의 최대 교역 파트너로서 뉴질랜드의 전체 수출액의 약 4분의 1을 차지하고 있으며, 양국은 2008년에 자유무역협정(FTA)을 체결했다.
이에 대해 피터스 부총리는 "우리의 가장 중요한 무역 관계가 위험에 처할 것이라고 생각하지 않는다"고 말했다.
중국 외교부장의 뉴질랜드 방문은 2017년 이후 처음으로 이루어진 것이다.
