A groundbreaking housing policy has been unveiled, setting the ambitious goal of achieving housing prices 3-5 times the median income. Additionally, a new system has been promised to streamline the approval process for housing construction below 60 sqm, enabling engineers' reports to suffice for authorization.
Minister Bishop underscored the responsibility of taxpayers in case of housing reform failure, emphasizing that they may need to subsidize rental fees for residents in social housing. He warned of the substantial costs the government would bear, including emergency housing subsidies, rental housing expenses, and assisting in bond payments if the housing issue remains unresolved.
Emphasizing the urgency of addressing housing prices as a critical economic and social concern, Minister Bishop criticized the current planning system for making housing construction exceedingly challenging. He advocated for increased housing construction on the outskirts of cities and taller buildings in the city centers.
Finally, in addressing the desired decrease in housing prices, Bishop referred to internationally recognized household income indicators, stating that a ratio of 3-5 times the income is considered appropriate. Current nationwide ratios stand at 6.6, with Auckland at 8.1, Wellington at 6.14, highlighting the pressing need for adjustment in the housing market.
