New Zealand Records 4% Unemployment Rate in Q4... Intense Competition in Job Market
According to the latest data released by Statistics New Zealand, the unemployment rate for the last quarter of 4/4 reached 4%. This represents a 0.1% increase compared to the previous quarter, slightly higher than the reported 3.9% in the December 2022 quarter.
The unemployment rate rose by 0.6% over the course of a year, from 3.5% in the December 2022 quarter. Becky Collett, Senior Manager of Workplace and Wellbeing Statistics, mentioned, "Despite historically low levels, the unemployment rate has risen to levels last seen in 2019."
She explained, "Due to restricted borders limiting the increase in labor supply and demand, the low unemployment rate from 2021 to 2022 formed part of a unique economic period."
In addition, the underutilization rate, which considers labor force more broadly than the unemployment rate, measured 10.7% in the December 2023 quarter. This is in comparison to 10.4% in the previous quarter and 9.3% in the December 2022 quarter.
Brad Olson, CEO of Infometrics, anticipated an increase in the figures due to sustained immigration levels. He stated in an interview with Brexfurst, "While not everyone necessarily lost their jobs, many are experiencing difficulty finding employment. A high level of immigration signifies increased competition in the coming year."
Furthermore, Shannon Barlow, Director of Program Hiring, in an interview with the press, predicted an increase in employment figures for similar reasons. She commented, "We have seen a significant influx of immigrants, putting a strain on the market. While this is positive, it does not necessarily mean our skills shortage issue is being resolved, so there may be some gaps."
Barlow emphasized that key shortage areas include construction, healthcare, and engineering. She added, "In recent years, job seekers have enjoyed the privilege of choosing positions, but the situation is changing as competition intensifies."
