According to IFSO, the man attempted to claim insurance for damages to his vehicle, citing flood damage. However, investigations revealed that the claim was unfounded, as the assessment had taken place two weeks prior to the flooding on January 13. Subsequently, his insurance claim was promptly rejected.
Despite warnings from the insurance company, the man's false claim led to his registration as a person of concern for other insurance companies. Consequently, his home and contents insurance were terminated.
Karen Stevens, spokesperson for IFSO, emphasized, "People registered in ICR often are unaware that their membership cancellations can extend to other insurers. This makes obtaining new insurance challenging, and any subsequent issues will significantly impact the individual."
The man filed a complaint with IFSO, but due to the already registered status, the insurance company is refusing to revoke the registration. As a result, he is now unable to secure insurance related to his home. Stevens stressed, "Insurance companies have strict policies regarding false statements, making it difficult to resolve issues through apologies or retractions."
This incident serves as a warning to other New Zealand citizens, emphasizing the importance of always prioritizing truthfulness and exercising caution when making insurance claims. Stevens concluded, "Choosing honesty with insurance companies is always a worthwhile decision, and we hope to prevent the recurrence of such situations."

카렌 스티븐스 IFSO 대변인은 "ICR에 등록된 사람들은 다른 보험사의 가입도 취소될 수 있다는 사실을 알지 못하는 경우가 많다"며 "이로써 새로운 보험 가입이 어려워지게 되며, 이후 발생하는 모든 문제는 해당 사람에게 큰 영향을 미칠 것"이라고 경고했다.
해당 남성은 IFSO 계획에 민원을 제기했지만, 이미 등록된 사실로 인해 보험사가 등록 해제를 거부하고 있으며, 이로써 그가 집과 관련된 보험에 가입할 수 없게 되었다. 스티븐스는 "보험사는 허위 진술에 엄격한 정책을 가지고 있어, 사과나 철회로는 문제를 해결하기 어렵다"고 강조했다.
이번 사건을 통해 다른 뉴질랜드 시민들에게 항상 진실을 중요시하고 보험금 청구 시 신중함이 필요하다는 경고가 담겼다. 스티븐스는 "보험사에게 진실을 말하는 것은 언제나 가치 있는 선택"이라며 "이러한 상황을 반복하지 않기를 바란다"고 전했다.
