Fletcher Building Announces Additional Costs for New Zealand International Convention Centre (NZICC) Project
Fletcher Building revealed today that an additional $165 million will be incurred for the construction of the New Zealand International Convention Centre (NZICC). This cost escalation is anticipated to push the project's completion to the end of 2024, delaying its original opening date from 2019.
Once completed, the project will boast 10 restaurants, 2700m² of conference space, and a 6674m² hall connected to 1000 hotel rooms via an overpass on Hobson Street in Auckland's CBD. However, the increased costs are primarily attributed to a rise in subcontractor resource levels required in the final stages of the project, as explained by the company. Furthermore, some claims related to project contract work insurance may not be recoverable, the company noted.
Ross Taylor, CEO of Fletcher Building, commented, "The NZICC redevelopment is a significantly complex and challenging project, with cost and revenue risks still present." He also added that efforts are underway to complete construction of all legacy projects by the end of 2024, actively pursuing recovery claims for legacy projects expected to be resolved in FY25-26.
On a separate note, Fletcher Building recently announced an additional $15 million needed for the restoration costs of Wellington International Airport parking.
Fletcher Building stated that the NZICC parking is currently completed, and the Hobson Hotel is set to welcome its first guests later this month. SkyCity Entertainment Group previously stated in an early 2021 announcement that NZICC would be completed in the latter half of 2024. However, SkyCity and the government have reportedly agreed to extend the long stop period for convention center completion from January 2025 to December 2027.
Lastly, regarding the NZICC construction site fire on October 22, 2019, Ross Taylor mentioned that the fire was caused by an accidental ignition from workers installing the roof. The recovery cost for the damages at that time was estimated to be over $340 million.

Fletcher Building은 NZICC 주차장이 현재 완료되었으며, Hobson Hotel은 이번 달에 첫 고객을 맞이할 예정이라고 전했다. SkyCity Entertainment Group은 2021년 초에 발표한 성명에서 NZICC가 2024년 후반에 완료될 것이라고 언급한 바 있다. 그러나 스카이시티와 정부는 컨벤션 센터 완공을 위한 장기 정지 기간을 2025년 1월에서 2027년 12월까지 연장하기로 합의한 것으로 알려졌다.
