Former New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern (43), known for her distinctive leadership during the COVID-19 response, is set to marry her partner Clarke Gayford, two years after their surprise engagement announcement in January of last year.
The couple, engaged in April 2019, originally planned to tie the knot in 2022. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, they had to postpone the wedding scheduled for the originally planned date.
On the 13th, Ardern and Gayford will host an intimate yet warm wedding ceremony at a winery in Hawke's Bay on the North Island of New Zealand to continue their de facto relationship. The private ceremony will be attended by Ardern's predecessor, former Prime Minister Chris Hipkins.
The two first met in 2013 when Gayford appeared in Parliament to protest against a security law amendment. Their relationship blossomed from this point, and even after Ardern became the youngest Prime Minister of New Zealand in 2017, their bond deepened.
They became parents in June 2018 when their daughter 'Neve' was born, making Ardern the second woman in history to give birth while in office as a national leader.
While the engagement took place in April 2019, the planned wedding in 2022 had to be postponed due to the global pandemic. Ardern, who led the nation through the pandemic with lockdown policies, suddenly announced her resignation in January last year citing energy depletion issues. On that occasion, she joyfully declared to Gayford, "Finally, let's have our wedding," attracting even more attention.

2019년 4월에 약혼한 두 사람은 원래 2022년에 결혼식을 올릴 계획이었으나, 당초 계획된 날짜에 코로나19 팬데믹으로 인해 결혼식을 연기했었다.
아던 전 총리와 게이포드는 13일, 뉴질랜드 북섬 호크스베이의 한 와이너리에서 사실혼 관계를 이어가기 위해 소박하면서도 따뜻한 분위기의 결혼식을 갖을 예정이다. 이번 결혼식은 비공개로 진행되며, 아던 전 총리의 전임자인 크리스 힙킨스 전 총리 역시 참석 예정이다.
두 사람은 2013년에 처음 만나게 되었으며, 그 당시 게이포드가 보안법 개정에 항의하러 의회에 나왔던 것이 계기였다. 이를 계기로 둘은 사랑으로의 발전을 거듭하였고, 2017년 아던이 뉴질랜드 최연소 총리로 취임한 이후에도 더욱 깊어진 관계를 이어가고 있다.
두 사람은 2018년 6월에 딸 '니브'를 둔 부모가 되었고, 아던 전 총리는 이로써 국가지도자로서 임기 중에 출산한 역사상 두 번째 여성이 되었다.
약혼은 2019년 4월에 이뤄졌고, 2022년에는 결혼식을 올릴 예정이었으나, 세계적인 대유행으로 결혼식을 연기하게 된 아던 전 총리는 그동안의 봉쇄 정책으로 코로나19 대응에 앞장서며 국민들을 이끌어왔다.
지난해 1월, 에너지 고갈 문제를 이유로 갑작스러운 사임 선언을 한 아던 전 총리는 그 자리에서 게이포드에게 웃으며 "드디어, 우리도 결혼식을 올리자"고 밝혀 더욱 관심을 모았다.
