Kāinga Ora Initiates Massive $500 Million Housing Redevelopment Project
In a groundbreaking venture, Kāinga Ora is currently undertaking a large-scale housing redevelopment program with a staggering investment of $500 million. This project is recognized as the largest housing initiative in the country, with approximately 750 public housing units already undergoing renovations since April, costing a total of $251 million. An additional 820 public housing units are scheduled for redevelopment later this year.
The housing redevelopment program has experienced steady growth since the initial revitalization of 69 homes in the Upper Hutt area back in 2019. Patrick Dougherty, Chief Construction and Innovation Officer at Kāinga Ora, emphasized that some of the government houses currently undergoing renovation were among the earliest public housing constructions. He noted, "While these government homes were excellent in their time, they were designed for lifestyles of the past and have now begun to show signs of aging."
Dougherty further explained, "We are breathing new life into these homes to ensure they are not only warm, dry, and safe but also suitable for people to live in both now and in the future." Upgrades include new facilities in kitchens and bathrooms, as well as insulation and double-glazed windows. "Once the renovations are complete, entering these new homes is akin to stepping into a different era. The effects can truly transform the lives of the families residing in these houses," Dougherty added.
He also highlighted that Kāinga Ora's ongoing redevelopment efforts encompass not only housing renovations but also regular maintenance tasks for all homes.
