Kiwi Bank Announces Significant Downward Adjustment in Mortgage Interest Rates

 

 

In a bold move, Kiwi Bank has announced substantial reductions in its mortgage interest rates. The special 2-year rate will see a decrease from 7.05% to 6.89%, the 3-year rate will be adjusted from 6.89% to 6.75%, the 4-year rate will drop from 6.79% to 6.69%, and the 5-year rate will experience a notable reduction from 6.79% to 6.59%.

Not stopping there, standard rates will also undergo a decrease, with the 2-year fixed standard rate being adjusted from 8.05% to 7.89%.

David, CEO of Squirrel, commented on the significant decline in wholesale rates before Christmas and early January, stating that a 0.5-1% drop in fixed rates is not surprising. He highlighted that while the reduction may be modest compared to wholesale rate fluctuations, there might not be significant changes in mortgage rates until regular deposit rates see a decline.

David predicted that the central bank might officially lower cash rates earlier than expected, suggesting the possibility of an aggressive interest rate cut as early as May this year.

However, economists at Kiwi Bank assessed a low likelihood of a rate cut in the first quarter, noting that while wholesale rates fell from approximately 5.6% to 5.3% in the past month, the 1-year TD rate still surpasses market levels at 6.15%.

This indicates that an interest rate cut in the first quarter of this year may be premature, with predictions that the central bank will remain inactive until inflation is kept below 3%. Economists also suggested that while the first rate cut is challenging to predict, there might be a gradual decrease later in the year.
