New Zealand Shifts Policy Direction with Central Bank (RBNZ) Role Adjustment
The New Zealand government has passed legislation reevaluating the mission of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ), focusing on full employment and price stability, reports the Australian Financial Review (AFR) on the 13th.
Consequently, the RBNZ has set a new target to maintain the inflation rate within the range of 2-3% for the next five years. Finance Minister Nicholas Wilkinson announced this legislation through close consultation with the central bank.
Historically, there has been concern in New Zealand about the central bank's reluctance to proactively respond to inflation, leading to delays in interest rate hikes. The inclusion of employment in the policy objectives raises concerns that interest rate adjustments may be slower.
In the recent third quarter, New Zealand's Consumer Price Index rose by 1.8% compared to the previous quarter and 5.6% compared to the same period last year. As a result, New Zealand, with its newly proposed policy direction, is strengthening preparations for stable economic growth.

이로써 뉴질랜드 중앙은행(RBNZ)은 향후 5년 동안 물가상승률을 2~3% 범위에서 유지하는 새로운 목표를 세우게 되었다. 니콜라스 윌킨슨 재무 장관은 중앙은행과의 긴밀한 협의를 통해 이번 법안을 발표했다.
과거 뉴질랜드에서는 중앙은행(RBNZ)이 물가 상승에 적극적으로 대응하지 않아 금리 인상을 미루는 데에 대한 우려가 있었다. 정책 목표에 고용이 포함되면 금리 조정이 더딜 수 있다는 우려가 제기되고 있는 상황이다.
뉴질랜드의 최근 3분기 소비자물가지수는 전 분기 대비 1.8%, 전년 동기 대비 5.6% 상승한 결과를 보였다. 이로 인해 새로운 정책 방향을 제시한 뉴질랜드는 안정적인 경제 성장을 위한 준비를 강화하고 있다.
