Global Ranking of 1000 Cities Revealed: New Zealand Secures Top Spot in Governance
The global ranking of the top 1000 cities for 2024 has been unveiled, dominated by major cities from the United States and the United Kingdom. Oxford Economics' latest index evaluates a comprehensive range of factors including economy, human capital, quality of life, environment, and governance.
New York and London secured the top two positions based on their economic performance, with Tokyo ranking third in Asia. Seoul, the capital of South Korea, climbed to 41st place, while Singapore followed closely at 42nd. Meanwhile, Busan ranked 252nd in the global standings.
New Zealand's cities, in particular, garnered attention in the governance category. Auckland secured 59th place overall, Wellington ranked 69th, and Christchurch held 89th place, with each city achieving first place in the governance sector.
According to Oxford Economics, this index encompasses a comprehensive evaluation based on economic growth, development potential, quality of life, environmental indicators, and governance systems. It provides vital information for policy makers aiming to enhance economic efficiency and improve public service quality.
Seoul faced challenges in the environmental sector, showing poor performance due to air quality issues and unpredictable weather patterns caused by climate change. However, it excelled in the human capital sector, demonstrating strong educational levels and vibrant corporate activity.
Lastly, New Zealand's outstanding performance in governance reflects a robust institutional framework that ensures political stability and citizen freedoms. This transparent and efficient administrative system significantly contributes to the overall development of cities.
Mark Prutton, director at Oxford Economics, emphasized the importance of their Global Cities Index in evaluating competitive advantages among cities and assisting policy makers in formulating strategic decisions.
