Wellington's housing market has attracted attention as listings have doubled compared to last year, while nationwide real estate experts note a stable housing market.

According to the latest report from the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ), the May housing price index rose by 2.3%, reflecting overall market trends. However, the national average sale price decreased by 1.3% year-on-year to $770,000.

In contrast, prices increased in 10 out of 16 regions, with the West Coast particularly notable for a 14% increase, reaching a high of $405,000.

Jen Baird, CEO of REINZ, stated, "Increased inventory levels and new listings contributed to a rise in total sales last month." She further added, "Seasonally adjusted figures show a 5.2% increase, surpassing expectations for sales volume."

In particular, Wellington saw a dramatic 103% increase in listings compared to the previous year, with significant increases also reported in Hawke's Bay (+34%), Marlborough (+33%), Auckland (+30%), Otago (+31%), and Waikato (+21%), according to the report.

This analysis is interpreted as a positive signal that Wellington's housing market remains vibrant despite current economic challenges.
