According to a recent announcement by a renowned consulting firm, inflation is not decreasing as rapidly as economists had anticipated, casting doubt on the possibility of any further interest rate cuts until 2025.
Data from the Gaspy price tracking app indicates that the average price of regular unleaded petrol (Gaspy 91) has risen by 26 cents to reach $2.86 on average.
In an interview with the Morning Report on Monday, Brad Olsen of Infometrics stated that petrol prices are a significant household expense. He noted that while prices have been historically high, the recent slow increase is expected to either continue or stabilize.
Brad Olsen further analyzed futures markets, suggesting that while there is some downward pressure, the lack of substantial global economic growth has prevented significant increases in oil demand and subsequent price hikes.
He pointed out that recent economic improvements in China and geopolitical risks have influenced petrol prices, forecasting a period of stagnation in the coming months.
Meanwhile, some economists are questioning the effectiveness of central bank policies in accelerating the decline in inflation amidst economic downturn, following the failure of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand’s measures.
