The nationwide new residential building permits recorded a decrease of 6.0% compared to the same period last year, totaling 2,795, according to the statistics bureau. This decline signals a slowdown in the construction industry.

A spokesperson for the statistics bureau explained that while there is a decrease compared to last year, the current figures are still maintaining the average levels from 1975 to 2018.

While single-family homes saw a marginal decrease of 0.5% to 1,297 units compared to the same period last year, multifamily dwellings including apartments, townhouses, and retirement villages saw a significant decrease of 10% to 1,498 units. Particularly noteworthy is the increase in apartments by 13% to 199 units, juxtaposed with retirement villages experiencing a sharp decline by 58% to 140 units.

Meanwhile, experimental statistics indicate that it takes an average of approximately 18 months for new residential constructions to be completed.

On an annual basis, there were a total of 36,276 new residential building permits issued, marking a 25% decrease compared to the same period last year. Multifamily dwellings accounted for 27,775 units, decreasing by 25% year-on-year, while single-family homes amounted to 15,501 units, representing a 24% decrease.

The decline in both multifamily and single-family dwellings at similar rates is in stark contrast to the trends observed last year, serving as a warning signal for the construction industry.

Looking at the breakdown by region, except for Gisborne and Hawke's Bay, new residential building permits decreased across all regions. Particularly notable is Auckland, which experienced a 27% decrease to 15,254 units compared to last year, Canterbury with a 21% decrease to 6,695 units, and Waikato and Wellington each recording a decrease of 28% and 40%, respectively.

한편, 실험 통계에 따르면 신규주택의 실제 건설에는 평균 약 18개월이 소요된다는 것으로 나타났다.

연간 기준으로는 3만 6,276건의 신규주택 건축허가가 이뤄졌으며, 이는 작년 동기 대비 25% 줄었다. 공동주택은 2만 775건으로 전년 대비 25% 감소했고, 단독주택은 1만 5,501건으로 24%가 감소했다.

주택 유형별로는 공동주택과 단독주택이 모두 비슷한 비율로 줄어들었다. 이는 작년의 추세와 대조적이며, 건설업계에 경고 신호로 받아들여질 수 있다.

지역별로 살펴보면, 기스번과 혹스베이를 제외한 모든 지역에서 신규주택 건축허가가 줄어들었다. 특히 오클랜드는 1만 5,254건으로 작년 대비 27% 줄었으며, 캔터베리는 6,695건으로 21% 감소했다. 와이카토와 웰링턴도 각각 28%, 40%의 감소를 기록했다.
