New Zealand Reserve Bank (NZRB) Decides to Hold Interest Rates Despite Economic Indicators Matching
In a statement released by the central bank, the New Zealand Reserve Bank, on Wednesday, April 10th, it is expected that there will be no change in the official cash rate (OCR) for this month, as economic indicators from the forecasting process somewhat align with the central bank's predictions.
The Monetary Policy Committee, in this statement, appears to have opted for rate stability and a reaffirmation of the key points outlined in the February statement. This inclination reflects the preference of the central bank, as articulated by BNZ's Chief Research Officer, Stephen Toplis, for implementing significant policy changes in full monetary policy announcements rather than interim reviews.
This statement is underpinned by new forecasts and a press conference, with monetary policy reviews anticipated to rely solely on meeting records and final decisions. However, even in the face of significant shifts in economic indicators, there seems to be little likelihood of the central bank either lowering interest rates or further tightening policy.
Sharon Zollner, Senior Economist at ANZ, expressed surprise at the more dovish tone following the February meeting, having anticipated additional rate hikes.
Many economists anticipate the upcoming release of the Consumer Price Index data to be pivotal. ASB expects a quarterly figure of 0.7%, while the central bank forecasts 0.4%.
ASB noted, "Given the lack of strong signals from upcoming Q1 inflation data, waiting for Q2 further enhances certainty for the central bank."
According to ANZ's Business Outlook Survey, pricing intentions and inflation expectations have been declining rapidly. Inflation expectations have decreased from just over 4% in October 2021 to 3.8%.
While economic growth has softened more than expected, employment remains robust. However, public sector layoffs have yet to manifest in data.
The central bank appears unlikely to ease monetary policy until next year, but most economists and traders anticipate an economic downturn, deeming early rate cuts inevitable.
As of Friday morning, bond markets have priced in a full rate cut in August, with most economists expecting the first rate cut in November.
