In response to the skyrocketing costs in construction, New Zealand has unveiled plans to relax regulations on imported building materials to tackle the downturn in housing construction.
According to leading New Zealand media outlets such as 1News on the 4th of April, Prime Minister Christopher Luxon announced during a press conference on that day that by lifting barriers to the use of foreign construction materials, they aim to lower construction costs. He stated, "Increased competition among various products is expected to lead to price reductions."
New Zealand aims to address the shortage of construction materials by making it easier to import and use foreign products through this regulatory relaxation. This decision is aimed at reducing the shortages and price increases resulting from relying solely on domestic materials.
There have been instances where construction projects across New Zealand have been halted due to shortages of plasterboard, with Fletcher Building, a major supplier responsible for over 90% of domestically produced plasterboard, unable to keep up with demand.
The New Zealand government attributes over 40% of the increase in construction costs to rising prices of building materials. Consequently, the government is pushing for measures that would allow certified high-quality building materials from overseas to be used without undergoing separate inspection processes if they align with New Zealand standards.
Construction Minister Chris Penk remarked, "Increasing the use of high-quality, affordable imported building materials can lower construction costs," adding that plans are underway to amend relevant legislation within this year.

뉴질랜드는 규제 완화를 통해 해외 제품의 수입과 사용을 더욱 용이하게 만들어 건축 자재 공급 부족 문제를 해결하고자 한다. 이러한 결정은 국내 자재에만 의존함으로써 발생하는 공급 부족과 가격 상승을 줄이기 위한 것이다.
과거에는 뉴질랜드 내에서 생산된 석고보드의 90% 이상을 공급하는 건축 자재 회사 플래처 빌딩이 수요를 따라가지 못하면서 석고보드 부족으로 전역적으로 주택 건설이 중단되기도 했다는 사례가 있었다.
뉴질랜드 정부는 건축비의 40% 이상 상승은 주로 건축자재 가격 상승으로 인한 것으로 분석하고 있다. 이에 따라 정부는 해외에서 인증받은 고품질의 건축 자재가 뉴질랜드 표준과 일치한다면 별도의 검사 과정 없이 사용할 수 있도록 하는 방안을 추진하고 있다.
크리스 펜크 건설부 장관은 "고품질의 저렴한 해외 건축자재 사용률을 높이면 건축비를 낮출 수 있을 것"이라며, 이에 따라 올해 안에 관련 법안을 개정할 계획이라고 밝혔다.
