Adrian Orr, the Governor of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ), has indicated that there is a global shift in inflation trends, with interest rates nearing their peak and a possibility of reduction looming.

The RBNZ has held the official cash rate (OCR) steady since May of last year, but there are indications in financial markets that a rate cut may be expected from August this year, with the possibility of it beginning as early as next year.

Orr stated that the New Zealand economy is aligning with the central bank's expectations, attributing the recent contraction towards the end of last year as a necessary adjustment. He remarked, "This signifies a return to the targeted inflation rate."

Furthermore, he anticipates stable inflation due to weakened overall demand and a reduction in core inflationary pressures, which he predicts would soon translate into more normalized interest rates.

'Uncertainty Looms Over Bank Regulation Relaxation and Competition'

On another front, Orr expressed uncertainty regarding the relaxation of banking regulations and supervision leading to increased competition in the retail banking market.

Last week, in a preliminary market study by the Commerce Commission, the stringent regulations on capital levels and systems were highlighted as barriers to competition and innovation necessary to break the dominance of major Australian banks.

The central bank, as the regulatory authority for the banking sector, has been demanding capital increases and preparation for deposit insurance schemes, a move that has faced criticism from small businesses feeling disadvantaged.

Orr emphasized that the central bank cannot afford to leave small and medium-sized enterprises behind while striving to promote competition. He stated, "We are considering ways to expand access to our payment systems," adding that he anticipates open banking to be a pivotal change disrupting the banking sector and fostering competition.
