A public letter signed by some key figures opposing the lease agreement for Auckland's downtown harbor has been announced according to a report by New Zealand's RNZ.

Addressed to Mayor Wayne Brown, the letter warns against the lease agreement for the urban location of the harbor, which would result in unsustainable industrial activities being discontinued at least until 2060. The proposal aims to lease the harbor operations while utilizing the rest of the city's space to secure some of the harbor land. However, signatories against this propose urging for a transformation of the harbor location into public shores such as Viaduct and Wynard Quarter.

Among those who signed the letter are Sir Stephen Tindall, Sir Ralph Norris, co-leader of the Green Party Chlöe Swarbrick, National Party deputy Nikki Kaye, renowned author C K Stead, and Auckland Central MP Chlöe Swarbrick, totaling 30 individuals.

The letter, titled 'Stop Stealing Our Harbour,' argues that the lease agreement ignores previous studies on the harbor and maintaining the urban location of the harbor is unsustainable.

Michael Goldwater, spokesperson for the Stop Stealing Our Harbour campaign, expressed concern, stating, "The future of Auckland's coastline is at stake." He added that maintaining the urban location of the harbor is unsustainable and will constrain the city's growth and development.

Julie Stout, spokesperson for Urban Auckland, stated, "The 35-year lease agreement will hinder the industrialization of the harbor." Emphasizing that such proposals are against Auckland's long-term interests, she argued for government intervention.

At this stage, the uncertainty of the harbor lease remains due to the opposition of a majority of lawmakers, but there are also reports of the New Zealand Maritime Union advocating for the Auckland Harbour to remain publicly owned.
