New Zealand Expected to Emerge from Economic Slowdown
On the 21st of this month, Stats NZ is set to release data for the second quarter of this year, with the market anticipating a modest growth of around 0.5%.
ANZ predicts a growth rate of 0.4%, while the central bank forecasts 0.5%, and Kiwibank is even more optimistic with a projection of 0.6%. This growth is attributed to New Zealand's surge in immigration as the country makes up for lost time due to the COVID-19 pandemic and border closures.
Over the past 12 months, more than 90,000 immigrants have arrived, helping to reverse the trend of declining house prices and ushering in a period of resurgence.
Stats NZ will also release the revised GDP figures for the first quarter of this year, which show a marginal decrease of just 0.06%. Despite its insignificance, this figure holds significant implications.
Finance Minister Grant Robertson, referring to the current account data released today, asserted that the economy has "turned a corner."
The current account deficit has decreased to 7.5% of GDP in June, surpassing expectations and reducing from 8.2% three months prior.
Robertson stated, "This is a positive outcome, exceeding the 8.1% GDP predicted by the Treasury in its pre-election fiscal and economic update."
The increase in exports of kiwifruit, dairy products, and tourism has primarily contributed to the improvement in the trade balance.
