The Consumer Price Index (CPI) in New Zealand has exhibited a significant deceleration during the fourth quarter, sparking intensified discussions on the timing of a potential interest rate cut. According to reports by The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) on the 23rd (local time), data from Statistics New Zealand reveals a 0.5% increase in the Consumer Price Index during the fourth quarter compared to the previous quarter.
The year-on-year CPI inflation rate stood at 4.7%, marking a substantial deceleration from the 5.6% recorded in the preceding quarter. This represents the smallest increase over a period exceeding two years, with the trimmed mean CPI inflation rate also settling at 0.6%, reflecting a 0.5% decline from the previous quarter.
In response to these developments, Jarrod Kerr, Chief Economist at Kiwibank, noted, "The inflation rate is moving in the direction indicating the upper range of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand's (RBNZ) inflation target of 1-3%." He added, "This does not necessarily imply an imminent interest rate cut." However, Coeur suggested that the tone of the RBNZ is expected to soften based on the upcoming meeting scheduled at the end of February, as indicated by recent reports, despite the central bank signaling additional interest rate hikes last year and concluding the year with a hawkish stance.
