Air New Zealand Ranked World's Safest Airline! Korean Airlines Also Enhance Safety
Amidst recent concerns over aircraft collisions at Tokyo Haneda Airport, Forbes has released a list of the world's top 25 safest airlines. According to the rankings by AirlineRatings.com, a website evaluating airline safety and performance, the top spot is claimed by the major New Zealand carrier, 'Air New Zealand.'
AirlineRatings.com considered various criteria, including serious accidents, recent fatalities, government and industry audits, pilot training assessments, and aircraft age, to determine the rankings. Incidents caused by natural disasters were excluded from the assessment. Air New Zealand particularly demonstrated its safety record by operating in the challenging weather conditions at Wellington International Airport in New Zealand.
Last year's top-ranking Australian airline, 'Qantas Airways,' secured the second position this time. The score difference between Qantas and Air New Zealand is 1.5 points, with AirlineRatings.com's editor-in-chief, Jeffrey Thomas, attributing Qantas's second place to aging equipment.
In the low-cost carrier (LCC) category, the Australian airline 'Jetstar' claimed the top spot. While the rankings were previously limited to the top 20, this year's list has expanded to the top 25. Thomas explained, "The reason for releasing the top 25 airlines this year is that the score differences between airlines are very close."
Although Korean Air did not make the rankings last year, it secured the 12th position among the safest airlines this time. In contrast, Japan Airlines remained at the 20th position following a recent aircraft collision incident. AirlineRatings.com analyzed that the overall safety standards of airlines in Korea and the broader Asian region are on the rise, as indicated by this year's rankings.

에어라인레이팅스닷컴은 항공사의 심각한 사고, 최근 사망 사고, 정부 및 업계 감사, 조종사 훈련 평가, 항공기 연식 등 다양한 기준을 고려하여 순위를 결정했다. 이때 천재지변으로 인한 사고는 제외되었다. 에어뉴질랜드는 특히 기상 환경이 까다로운 뉴질랜드 웰링턴국제공항에서 항공기를 운항하며 안전성을 입증했다.
작년 1위였던 호주의 '콴타스항공'은 이번에는 2위에 올랐다. 에어뉴질랜드와의 점수 차이는 1.5점으로, 노후화된 기자재 때문에 2위에 머물렀다고 에어라인레이팅스닷컴의 제프리 토마스 편집장은 설명했다.
저비용 항공사(LCC) 부문에서는 호주 항공사 '젯스타'가 1위를 차지했다. 순위는 작년까지 20위까지만 공개되었으나, 올해는 25위까지 확장되었다. 토마스는 "올해 상위 25개 항공사를 공개한 이유는 항공사 간의 점수 차이가 매우 작아서"라고 설명했다.
한국의 대한항공은 작년에는 순위에 오르지 못했지만, 이번에는 가장 안전한 항공사 중 12위를 차지했다. 반면, 일본항공은 최근 항공기 충돌사고로 20위에 머물렀다. 에어라인레이팅스닷컴은 이번 순위 발표로 전반적으로 한국과 아시아 지역의 항공사들이 안전성을 높이고 있다고 분석했다.
